1. The Multi-Variant Stockout Multiplier
In a variety pack containing 4 different flavors, the bundle can only be fulfilled if all 4 flavors are in stock. If each flavor has a 90% in-stock rate, the mathematical probability of the complete bundle being in stock is:
P(Bundle In Stock) = 0.90 × 0.90 × 0.90 × 0.90 = 65.6%
This means that despite high individual inventory levels, more than 34% of bundle shoppers encounter a disabled product or an out-of-stock error at checkout!
2. The Solution: Rule-Based Inventory Swapping
Rather than disabling the entire bundle when one variant sells out, intelligent merchandising engines implement prioritized fallback rules:
- Automatic Mode: Automatically substitutes the out-of-stock flavor with the merchant's highest-stock secondary choice (e.g. swapping Mango for Citrus Breeze).
- Confirm-First Mode: Alerts the shopper with an inline banner: "Mango is sold out. Would you like Citrus Breeze instead?"
